QUILCENE — The Carpe Diem String Quartet will open the eighth season of Concerts in the Barn with performances at 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The chamber music series will be in the barn at the Quilcene Lantern, 7360 Center Road, Quilcene.
The concert series is free with the exception of the the Aug. 8 fundraiser gala, but reservations at www.ticketstripe.com/event-list/concerts-in-the-barn are encouraged.
Friday’s performance will feature String Quartet No. 4 by Grażyna Bacewicz and Franz Schubert’s Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden.”
“This year, we decided to add Friday concerts to our season in addition to our regular weekend concerts,” volunteer director Leigh Hearon said. “It allows the artists to play more repertoire, both in groups and individually. I am absolutely thrilled at what we’re offering audiences this summer.”
The Carpe Diem String Quartet is composed of cellist Ariana Nelson, violist Korine Fujiwara and violinists Marisa Ishikawa and Sam Weiser.
The quartet will be joined by cellist Amy Barston and flamenco dancer Amy Montes for the “Fandango” movement from Luigi Boccherini’s Cello Quintet No. 4 on Saturday and Sunday.
The Saturday and Sunday concerts also will include Franz Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major and violist Korine Fujiwara’s “Mosey,” which premiered at Carnegie Hall last spring.
Concerts in the Barn’s season of free concerts will continue through July 20, followed by a benefit gala to raise funds for next year’s season on Aug. 8.
Concertgoers can sit inside on comfortable chairs, in the loft or bring chairs or blankets to sit on outside on the lawn.
Wine, cider, non-alcoholic beverages, coffee, cookies and ice cream will be available for purchase in the Milking Shed area, although concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunches.
Bottled water will be available for free.
Duo Monde G&G, composed of pianists George Lopez and Gulimina Mahamuti, will present “Sounds of Latin America,” a two-hand piano performance, on July 18.
The concert will feature music by Astor Piazzolla, Ernst Mahle, Fazil Say, José Elizondo, Errolyn Wallen and Nikolai Kapustin.
On July 19-20, Lopez and Mahamuti will be joined by violinists Dawn Posey and John Weller, violist Melissa Lund Ziegler, cellist Sarah Rommel and Joseph Kaufman on the double bass along with soprano Laura Bohn for concerts that will include pieces by Gabriel Fauré, Kurt Weill and Franz Schubert.
Concerts in the Barn also will host Russian pianist Eleonora Karpukhova for a fundraiser at 2 p.m. Aug. 8 in the Milking Shed.
Tickets to that performance will cost $50 per person, and that will help to fund the 2026 season.
Karpukhova will perform works by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel and Rachmaninoff.
