Candy Cane Parade begins Monday in Port Angeles

Other volunteers take over for firefighters

PORT ANGELES — Volunteers are conducting the Candy Cane Parade of Happiness this year as a replacement for the Port Angeles Fire Department’s annual Operation Candy Cane.

The distribution of candy canes and collecting of non-perishable food or money for the Port Angeles Food Bank will begin at 5:30 p.m. each day this week.

Here is the schedule:

• Monday: West of First and M streets.

• Tuesday: I and L streets to C Street.

• Wednesday: C Street to Lincoln Street.

• Thursday: Chase Street to Chambers Street.

• Friday: Jones Street to Golf Course Road.

• Saturday: Above Lauridsen Boulevard.

Port Angeles firefighters have for many years past decorated a vintage fire engine and driven through the streets with Santa Claus.

They are unable to do that this year because of COVID-19 restrictions, so other volunteers have taken on the food drive.

The project is the idea of Katheryn Murray of Pacific Northwest Mobile Detailing. She, along with volunteers from the Clallam County YMCA and Joyful Events and Balloons, will parade through the streets of Port Angeles passing out candy canes and collecting food for the food bank just as firefighters have done in the past.

The fire department has donated candy canes.

Instead of a vintage fire truck there will be a small parade of five or six vehicles with Santa, decorated vehicles and carolers.

The group will announce their presence with cow bells and carolers and perhaps horns.

All donated food will be taken to the Port Angeles Food Bank each evening. They will follow the same six-day route the firefighters have used in the past.

The map came with utility bills or can be found on the YMCA Facebook page and PNW Mobile Detailing Facebook page.
