Candlelight Concert to feature Toot Sweet clarinets

PORT TOWNSEND — Toot Sweet, composed of three soprano clarinets and one bass clarinet, will perform at the August Candlelight Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The concert will be at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $10 with children admitted free. Donations benefit local organizations and Trinity’s music and historic Victorian restoration program.

Refreshments will be served following the performance.

Toot Sweet has been a part of the Candlelight Concert series for several years. The group offers varied musical styles, accompanied by sometimes humorous commentary about the pieces they perform.

The theme of the program, “Latin and Licorice,” will feature music by composers from South America, Spain, and Mexico, played on “licorice sticks,” the slang term for clarinets.

Traditional favorites such as “Besame Mucho,” “El Condor Pasa” and “Habanera” will be included, as well as Piazolla’s Three Tangos, music from the movie “The Mask of Zorro” and other Latin favorites.

Styles vary from the seductive tango to the energetic paso doble, and are sure to add spice to the listening experience.

Nancy Peterson, Mark Holman, Jan Proebstel and Vickey Blakesley will play a variety of clarinets.

Each of the performers plays with many local groups, such as the Port Angeles Symphony, Poulsbo Symphony and the Sequim City Band.
