The North Olympic Library System and Port Townsend Library will host Book-It Repertory Theatre’s performance of “El Deafo” on Thursday during the first week of their annual summer reading programs.
The theater group will perform at the Port Angeles Library at 2210 S. Peabody St. at 11 a.m. and at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St. in Port Townsend, at 4 p.m., hosted by the Port Townsend Library.
The free show is geared toward young people, kindergarten through sixth grade.
In this staging of Cece Bell’s Newbery-honored graphic novel “El Deafo,” audiences will experience Cece’s journey as she learns to embrace her hearing loss and searches for a true friend.
When Cece is 4, she loses her hearing due to an illness. She faces embarrassment at school with her bulky hearing aid strapped to her chest, but she then discovers a superpower: the ability to hear the teacher when she is not in the room.
“El Deafo” was adapted by Kelly Kitchens and is directed by Ryan Schlecht. Cheyenna Clearbrook, Rachel Guyer-Mafune, Mary Hould, Andrew Wilkes and Anthea Carns perform.
The show will be performed using spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL).
