Block play programs at Clallam County libraries meant to help kids learn

Youngsters between the ages of 8 months and 8 years can learn math and science through block play sponsored by the four Clallam County public libraries this summer, with the first events set Wednesday.

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s (NOLS) annual Summer Reading Program, NOLS is working with the Parenting Matters Foundation and the First Teacher Program to bring BLOCK Fest to all areas of the libraries it oversees.

Here is the schedule:

• 10 a.m. Wednesday — Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave.

• 2 p.m. Wednesday — Clallam Bay Library, 16990 state Highway 112.

• 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5 — Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

• 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15 — Sequim Middle School cafeteria, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Parents and/or caregivers accompany their child and are strongly encouraged to join in the play.

Children and adults can rotate from station to station in a self-guided tour to play with a variety of different blocks.

More information about the Parenting Matters Foundation, the First Teacher Program and the research behind BLOCK Fest will be available.

The theme for the 2017 Summer Reading Program is “Build a Better World.” The NOLS Summer Reading Program runs through Aug. 19.
