Benefit concert features area singers

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Friends Meeting is hosting a benefit concert featuring seven local singers this Saturday.

The concert will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Friends Meetinghouse, 1841 Sheridan St.

The event will start with a dessert social at 7 p.m. and music at 7:30 p.m.

These Meetinghouse Concerts are a benefit to raise money for the loan on Friends Meetinghouse. Admission is by donation.

The singers include five men from the Port Townsend men’s singing group Singers in the Rain and three women who will perform blues standards while accompanied by Hazel Johnson, the Singers in the Rain co-leader, on piano.

The singers include Frank Boyle, a tenor and ukulele player; Michael Cohoon, baritone; Pat Hartman, alto; Robert Huber, bass; Jeff Johnson, tenor; Sue Reid, alto and Scott Rosekrans, baritone.

The songs cover a wide spectrum of blues music, from simple early blues that grew organically out of experience and were passed down by oral tradition, on through to a blues song composed by Duke Ellington.

Singers in the Rain is a small group that performs almost entirely without a conductor.

For more information, phone Hazel Johnson at 360-385-6000.
