PORT TOWNSEND — Kef will perform Balkan folk music for a dance at the Palindrome from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Admission will be $10 at the door of the Palindrome at 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road.
An introduction to basic dance steps will be taught from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The class will be led by Richard and Susi Watson and Susi Thomas.
The band — a Balkan dance band from Eugene, Ore. — takes its name, Kef, from a Middle Eastern word describing a state of drowsy contentment. The associated Greek word “kefi” describes a spirit of joy, passion, enthusiasm, high spirits and overpowering emotion, according to a press release.
The band’s members have immersed themselves in learning the traditional music of Bulgaria, Macedonia and neighboring Balkan countries, and have trained with native ethnic musicians at numerous camps and workshops.
This is a rare opportunity to hear live Balkan music performed in Port Townsend, according to a press release, and is an excellent dance opportunity for all, from beginners to seasoned dancers.
No partner is necessary. Dance group members will offer help and encouragement to all wishing to join the dances.
“Balkan line dance bonds communities and all are welcome to this family-friendly event,” organizers said.
Seating is available for those who prefer to simply listen and enjoy.
Eaglemount wines and ciders will be available for purchase for those 21 and older.
