Bainbridge illustrator to talk in Northwind

PORT TOWNSEND — Join Bainbridge Island book artist Carolyn Terry as she discusses the creation of her work at the Northwind Book Arts Group spring meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

She will speak at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

“As an artist, I work in one of the trickiest mediums to define: artists’ books,” Terry said in a press release.

She combines her background in crafts, drawing and painting with her interest in writing fiction to create one-of-kind books.

“I get to mess around all day,” she said.

Originally a Californian, Terry retired to the Northwest after a career in teaching.

“My internal compass always pointed north,” she said. “Georgia O’Keefe may have liked the desert; my inspiration comes from fog and cedar forests.”

Terry spends her studio time filling pages with fish and insects and plants, or carving chickens that tell your future, placing a dodo on wheels, or loading a small boat with tiny messages-in-a-bottle.

A number of her books can be seen at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

The Northwind Book Arts Group is dedicated to exploring and cultivating contemporary aesthetic interpretations of the book as art, while preserving the traditional practices involved in the creations of books and providing a forum for exchange among fine printers, typographers, binders and artists in and around Port Townsend and the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas.

The group is open to all with an interest in artist’s books, fine printing and paper.
