Auditions next week for The Lion in Winter

PORT ANGELES — Auditions for the Port Angeles Community Players’winter offering, The Lion in Winter, will be conducted this Thursday and next Saturday, Dec. 9.

Thursday’s auditions will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday’s auditions will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd. on the Playhouse stage.

There are roles for five men and two women, ages 18-60-plus. More details about the characters can be found at www.pacommunityplayers.org.

Rehearsals will generally be week nights beginning the first week of January. Not everyone will be called each night in the early rehearsals.

Perusal copies of the script are available at the Sequim and Port Angeles public libraries.

The show will run from Feb. 23 through March 10 with 7:30 p.m. performances on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays.

Betrayal, treachery, and a knife fight area ll prt of the Christmas celebration for the royal Plantagenet family of Britain in The Lion in Winter.

King Henry II throws a Christmas feast for the newly crowned King of France. Also in attendance are Henry’s three plotting sons, and Henry’s wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, newly released from house arrest.

While the sons backstab and squabble to take their place in history, Eleanor and Henry use their offspring as pawns against each other. Told in “marvelously articulate language, with humor that bristles and burns,” according to the Los Angeles Times, The Lion in Winter transcends the historical genre to become a bitingly hilarious family drama, organizers said.

Director Janice Parks says that she is hands-on.

“I don’t just sit and watch and then give verbal direction; I actively get onstage and walk and talk the actors through what I am envisioning,” she said. “I love to see what happens when the vision I have for a show combines with the vision the actors and production staff bring to make a unique and wonderful product.”

Those who want to audition but cannot make the scheduled audition dates, or those with additional questions about the play or roles, are urged to contact PACP board member Ken Winters at kenpacp@gmail.com.
