Art on display in Port Townsend during First Saturday

Variety of gifts available

PORT TOWNSEND — Painting, woodwork and variety of artistic gifts for the holidays are offered at the First Saturday Art Walk in Port Townsend.

Artists are expected to be available to meet the public as venues throughout the downtown participate in the art walk from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first Saturday of each month. Among them are Gallery 9 and Port Townsend Gallery.

In addition, the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, at 1012 Water St., offers free admission all day starting at 11 a.m. on the monthly art walk Saturday, with hours extended to 7 p.m. For more about the museum, see https://jchsmuseum.org/visit/jefferson-museum.

At Gallery 9, 1012 Water St., Linda Lundell’s art focuses on nature.

“Driven by her desire to help preserve our country’s natural beauty for generations to come, she immerses the viewer in a profound spiritual experience,” organizers said. “In her finely detailed paintings, she captures the living abundance of a rain forest or the transparent quality of water.”

Lundell received a bachelor’s degree from California State University at Long Beach and a master’s in Fine Art from Rhode Island School of Design. She taught at several art schools in California.

Her style is impressionistic. Her oil paintings from a distance look realistic, but up close, the viewer sees abstract dabs of color.

In her cloisonné jewelry, she captures miniature replicas of hummingbirds, irises and other sacred symbols of nature using colored enamels in finely powered glazes. Her technique involves several firings and polishing to a high gloss.

In 1978, Robin McKann was given the opportunity to work on his spiritual master’s house in Malibu, and his skills as a cabinet and furniture maker evolved from there, organizers said.

After retiring from finish carpentry business in Southern California, he moved to Port Townsend.

He uses spalted alder, figured maple, myrtle wood and many exotic woods that he has collected over the years.

All his creations are coated with layers of hand-rubbed pure tung oil, giving them a durable, water-resistant, nontoxic surface.

His functional art designs are inspired by James Krenov, Sam Maloof and, he added, Mother Nature.

“I have spent many years chasing rainbows in grains of wood,” McKann said.

McKann’s fine woodworking is found exclusively at Gallery 9, which he joined in 2008.

Gallery 9 is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day except Tuesday.

Port Townsend Gallery, at 715 Water St., is hosting its December Christmas artists from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Light refreshments will be served.

“One-stop gift shopping with selections from the gallery’s 26 artists,” is promised, organizers said.

Fine art jewelry, art creations, ceramics, photography, watercolors, Japanese-styled hand bags, collages, abstracts, oils, woodcuts, pastels, metal work, mixed media, layered hardwood miniature bowls, handspun wraps and luxury scarves, Temari art balls, Batiks, pen and inks, carved wood and many small stocking stuffer gift items are on hand.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, as well as by appointment.
