Art in the Library opening reception planned

PORT TOWNSEND — The opening reception for Art in the Library at the Port Townsend Public Library will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.

The exhibit at the library at 1220 Lawrence St. is free and will be on display until July 10.

Art will be paintings by Meg Kaczyk, beach creatures by Jeff Krida, altered books and mixed media by Mary K. O’Shaughnessy and bird photography by Kerry Tremain.

Art is exhibited throughout the historic 1913 library, including the restored Carnegie Reading Room, as well as the Carnegie staircase and the Charlie Moore Art Case, which features small work.

Northwind Arts Center sponsors the Art in the Library shows.

Kaczyk teaches adult art process classes at Port Townsend School of the Arts and has been an Artist Showcase artist at Northwind Arts Center for three years.

Locally, her paintings have been exhibited in the Exhibit Gallery at Northwind Arts Center and at Jefferson Healthcare Hospital through Northwind’s Art in the Hospital program.

Other recent highlights include four paintings selected for Lynnwood Convention Center’s exhibit “Contemporary NW Landscape” (on display through April 2020); a PtSA faculty group exhibit at Seattle Convention Center (2019), and a 2019 Centrum Artist Residency, which culminated in nine new paintings and moderation of a public discussion about Art and Environment at Northwind Arts Center

Krida is a lifelong woodworker, crafting everything from decks to wine cellars to fine furniture.

He squeezed in studio studies in oil painting and sculpture at American University in Washington, D.C., in the 1970s while majoring in International Affairs.

Retirement from a corporate life in the airline and passenger cruise businesses led him to move from homes in Seattle and Todos Santos, Mexico, to Port Townsend in 2016, and to return to his lifelong passion for creating beautiful “companion pieces” in wood.

His beach creatures are in private collections in Seattle and Chicago, and at his home on Discovery Bay, but the sculptures in this show are on their first public display.

He will donate the proceeds from purchased beach creatures in this show to Northwind Arts Center, Port Townsend Marine Science Center and Port Townsend School of the Arts.

O’Shaughnessy is a mixed media artist, designer and architect. After running a commercial gallery in Chicago for over a decade, she went full tilt into her own art career, working mostly three dimensionally.

Her work has been exhibited across the country, in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Washington state and Washington, D.C.

Tremain is a photographer, editor and designer whose books include “Yosemite: A Storied Landscape” (2014), “Year of the Birds” (2018), and “Birds Two” (2019).

He is the former editor-in-chief of California magazine, creative director of Mother Jones and co-founder of the International Fund for Documentary Photography.

He has curated photography exhibitions in France, Mexico and the United States, and written on photography for books and magazines. He has served for the past three years as President of Port Townsend School of the Arts.
