Arctic photographer to share his work and thoughts in Port Angeles presentation

PORT ANGELES — Dave Shreffler will share arctic photographs at an evening Studium Generale presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The free presentation will be in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Shreffler has photographed extensively in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Gates of the Arctic National Park and the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska over seven extended visits to the Alaskan Arctic since 2001.

His presentation will trace the arc of his transformation from Arctic adventurer to photographer to wilderness advocate.

Shreffler will emphasize the importance of thinking beyond our own time.

Shreffler is a restoration ecologist who has spent his professional career trying to protect and restore salmon and their ecosystems. He has lived on the Olympic Peninsula since 1990.

His Arctic photographs have been published in “Striking a Balance in America’s Western Arctic: The National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska” (2011); “The Quiet World: Saving Alaska’s Wilderness Kingdom, 1879-1960” (2011); “America’s Unknown Treasure: National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska” (2012); “On Arctic Ground: Tracking Time Through Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve” (2012); and “We Are The Arctic” (2016).

His images have also appeared in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., environmental group websites, brochures and private photo collections.
