Almost Blue to perform in Coyle on Sunday

COYLE — A jazz duo will perform at Concerts in the Woods at 3 p.m. Sunday.

“As the days get shorter, colder and wetter, we will change our concert format from Saturday evenings to Sunday afternoons,” starting with this Sunday’s performance by Almost Blue, said series organizer Norm Johnson.

Admission to the concert at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, will be by donation.

Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission to guests.

“I’ve been looking for an easy-listening jazz duo to bring to Coyle and this is it,” Johnson said. “They know the standards well and take the audience to a new, yet comfortably familiar place.”

Almost Blue, based in Olympia, is made up of Joanne Green on vocals and Brendon Keenan on guitar.

They perform jazz standards, tunes from the Great American Songbook, blues and Latin.

Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra are strong influences on the material, which includes among others songs of Ellington, Gershwin, Porter, and Rodgers and Hart — and one Patsy Cline song written by Willie Nelson.

Green has sung professionally in Boston and New Hampshire. Since she was 5, she has played piano.

Keenan — a jazz guitarist from Glasgow, Scotland — has performed with many groups in the U.S. and Europe in a wide variety of styles, including big band, straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, funk, blues, rock and traditional Celtic music.
