PORT TOWNSEND — Hope for the future, amid a dark time: It’s the subject of a new nonfiction book by a local author.

Diane Urbani de la Paz, a Port Townsend-based journalist and former PDN reporter, will discuss “All My Love: A Story of War and Hope,” her newly published book, at 7 p.m. Thursday in a free online talk.

The Port Townsend Public Library will host the event and provide plentiful time for questions from viewers.

“All My Love” is how Sgt. Donovan Lusk, the hero of this story, signed his letters to his wife, Anne, while he was on the battlefields of Luxembourg and France.

Lusk’s letters, written 78 years ago and discovered more recently, inspired Urbani de la Paz’s book. It’s also a memoir, telling the story of the Lusks’ legacy in the 21st century.

“What a ride you took us on,” said reader and PDN publisher emeritus John Brewer. The book is “quick-paced — and very romantic and inspirational.”

Charlotte Warren, a Port Angeles poet and author, noted that “while the terrors of World War II swept over [Donovan and Anne], the tenderness of those lovers kept them moving forward.”

Their story reminds us, Warren said, to “live our lives fully.”

Local bookstores including Imprint Books in downtown Port Townsend and Port Book and News in downtown Port Angeles carry “All My Love” in paperback. The Port Townsend and Jefferson County libraries also have it.
