Acoustic blues artist featured at Concerts in the Woods

COYLE — John “Greyhound” Maxwell will bring the blues to Concerts in the Woods at 3 p.m. Sunday.

“Blues guitar music is a beautiful thing when done well and our next guest is one who does it right,” said series organizer Norm Johnson.

The concert will be at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road. Admission will be by donation. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission.

Maxwell, born and raised in Chicago, has recently relocated to Port Townsend from San Rafael, Calif. He teaches slide guitar at the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.

“He is a master of acoustic finger style, bottleneck slide guitar and a singer, too,” according to his biography.

His debut solo CD, “Blues For Evangeline” placed in the top five in the Best Self Produced CD category at the 2016 Memphis International Blues Challenge.

In 2017, he had a song placed in a film at the Sundance Festival.

The Washington Blues Society recently named Maxwell the 2018 award recipient for Best Acoustic Blues Guitar.

This year finds Maxwell sharing the stage with well-known blues greats, opening shows for Marcia Ball, Albert Cummings, Keb’Mo and Taj Mahal.

“Back when I was 16 or 17, I would tell myself I wanted to have a successful music career, and it was OK if it happened at 60, as long as it happened,” he said in his biography. “I think I set my course there.”
