Acclaimed indie folk duo to play Port Townsend on Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — Seattle indie folk duo The Winterlings will perform in concert at the Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $10 at the door at 3918 San Juan Ave.

The duo will also perform a no-cover-charge concert at Next Door Gastropub, 113 W. First St., Port Angeles, at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Last year, The Winterlings released two albums of their original music to great acclaim. PASTE magazine called the band’s January 2016 release, “You Are Acres,” “a gorgeous follow-up to their stunning debut” (2010’s “The Animal Groom”), and No Depression magazine called the November 2016 album, “Poems That Live As People,” “absolutely spellbinding.”

Both albums have made Top 30 charts at radio stations across the country.

Throughout their albums, as at their live shows, songwriters Amanda Birdsall and Wolff Bowden take turns singing lead and playing guitar, violin, banjitar, harmonium, piano and foot percussion.

According to a news release: “An evening with The Winterlings takes listeners on vivid and cinematic journeys, soaring with astronauts above a warming planet, hitchhiking from Alaska with a fisherman heading home to propose to his beloved, witnessing the struggle of a girl in the storm of social anxiety and walking deeper into the forest of human existence.”

When the couple first met at a Buddhist fire ritual, Birdsall had abandoned a doctoral program in psychology to work on organic farms and write songs. Bowden was a visual artist who couldn’t play a single chord.

Ten years and four albums later, the couple have toured all over the U.S. as well as Canada and Mexico, collecting fans of all ages who are inspired by originality and meaning, organizers said.

The Unity performance offers a rare opportunity to hear The Winterlings in a quiet, listening-room venue in Port Townsend.

The duo will perform songs from their new albums as well as crowd favorites from their earlier release, such as “Jennie Hodgers,” which tells the true story of an Irish immigrant woman who dressed as a man to sneak into the Union army and fight in the Civil War.

The song was recently featured in a documentary about this unique historical figure.
