A founder of New Age music to perform in Coyle this Sunday

COYLE — One of the original Windham Hill Artists from the beginnings of New Age music will perform as part of the ongoing Concerts in the Woods series on Sunday.

Pianist Scott Cossu will be accompanied by guitarist Lonnie Mardis at the concert at 3 p.m. at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center at 923 Hazel Point Road.

Admission is by donation. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served at intermission.

The matinee will be a special Valentine’s Day concert “because of the sweet piano and guitar confection,” said Norm Johnson, concert series organizer.

“Scott Cossu says he can play some pretty romantic tunes for this concert, not to mention some nice ‘chocolate’ sound creations,” Johnson said, adding that “as an extra treat, his music will be enriched by the accompaniment of Lonnie Mardis on guitar, who knows Scott’s music well.

“This promises to be an incredible afternoon of great music and an opportunity to hear one of the founders of New Age music up close in our intimate venue,” Johnson said.

Cossu recently recorded with Neville Pearsal at Synergy Sound in Chimacum Valley, Johnson said.

Cossu describes himself as “one of the grandfathers of the New Age scene” on his website at www.scottcossu.com.

He was one of the first Windham Hill Artists to join with founder Will Ackerman and Alex Degrassi in their new label out of Palo Alto, Calif., more than 30 years ago.

His most recent CD, “Tides Between Us,” is dedicated to the Puget Sound area of Washington state.

Mardis, who lives in Seattle, has performed as a guitarist from Sun Valley, Idaho, to Nagasaki, Japan, according to his website at www.lonniemardis.com.

A performer and composer, he was selected to write for the NW Sinfonia Orchestra, conducted by Grammy award winner David Sabee. The resulting piece, “El Espirito de la Cancion,” is included on the album “Celebrate World Music.”
