24 hours of improv presented this weekend

PORT TOWNSEND — The truly devoted might wish to bring a sleeping bag, supplies and sustenance.

The Chameleon Theater, 800 West Park Ave., will present its annual Improv-a-thon, 24 hours of improv from noon Saturday to noon Sunday.

Admission is by suggested donation, and reservations are not necessary. All proceeds go to the theater.

Audience members and participants need not stay 24 hours, but it’s best to be prepared. Indeed, many remain through the night, artistic director Joey Pipia said in a news release.

“My favorite memory is watching a fully improvised musical that happened at 3 a.m. at the Improv-a-thon three years ago,” Pipia said. “It was a transcendent moment.”

Watch and participate

The free improv event allows all to observe and participate, regardless of experience or association with the theater.

For the first time, the event is sponsored, allowing the theater to install three new dimmer packs for the lighting system.

“I joked that we’d be rehearsing in the dark, and these awesome folks said, ‘No way!’ ” Pipia said.

The sponsors include Cathy Formusa Massage, John L. Scott, Edensaw Wood, The Car Wash, Crossroads Music, Daily Computers, Reinstra Clinic, The Commanders Beach House, SOS Printing and Olympus.net.
