PORT TOWNSEND — A pair of women accused of burglarizing a Port Hadlock home Christmas morning were charged with residential burglary in Jefferson County Superior Court on Tuesday and might face more charges.
The women, Jennifer B. Scribner, 40, and Stephanie R. Brown, 25, were in the process of burglarizing the house in Port Hadlock late Christmas morning when a deputy caught them in the act, according to court documents.
Deputy Brian Anderson arrived at the residence at about 11:20 a.m. Monday in response to an alert from the homeowners’ alarm system company.
Anderson already had Scribner handcuffed near the vehicle when Brown came out of the residence. He ordered Brown at gunpoint to drop what she was carrying and to drop to her knees.
“This was a mistake,” she said, according to court papers.
Brown told deputies that she had pushed on the home’s door until it opened. They both told deputies they were driving around in the area before randomly picking the home they allegedly broke into.
Scribner was held in the Jefferson County jail Tuesday on $750 bail while Brown was released from custody.
They are both scheduled to appear in court again Friday, though the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to recommend more charges, said Sgt. Mark Apeland.
Apeland said that after serving a search warrant on Scribner’s vehicle, deputies found stolen mail from the home next door, including Christmas cards and a bank statement.
He anticipated the women would each be charged with possession of stolen property.
