SEQUIM — A 40-year-old man was arrested on investigation of multiple charges after he allegedly led law enforcement officers on a chase with speeds reaching in excess of 85 mph, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.
Brian Joseph Arnold was booked into the Clallam County jail on Saturday on investigation of driving under the influence of drugs, eluding a police vehicle, driving while license suspended and possession of a controlled substance. He remained in jail Monday.
About 10 p.m. Friday, Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Brooks observed a driver not maintaining their lane of travel on Old Olympic Highway near North Barr Road and attempted to stop the vehicle on suspicion of DUI, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
The driver fled southbound onto Barr Road, where a passenger in the vehicle was observed throwing items out of the passenger’s side window, the sheriff’s office said.
The driver continued to U.S. Highway 101, where they turned eastbound toward Sequim and accelerated to speeds exceeding 85 mph as they traveled through the Carlsborg area, the sheriff’s office said.
The chase turned south onto Taylor Cutoff Road and continued until about the 200 block of Lost Mountain Road before the vehicle stopped, the sheriff’s office said.
Law enforcement units from the State Patrol, Sequim Police Department and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office arrived to help at the scene, where Arnold was taken into custody. A passenger was questioned and later released, the sheriff’s office said.
Items thrown out of the vehicle were located on North Barr Road and included drug paraphernalia, the sheriff’s office said.
A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, which contained multiple items of drug paraphernalia and a small amount of a white substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said.
