Trial date set for son accused of killing father in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Shay Clinton Darrow is competent to stand trial for his father’s murder, a final report said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Erik Rohrer signed on Friday an order finding the 28-year-old competent to go to trial for the shooting death of Clint Leroy Darrow at the elder Darrow’s Port Angeles home on Jan. 12, 2017.

Shay Darrow is scheduled to be arraigned on a first-degree murder charge Jan. 26.

Darrow, who was treated for schizoaffective disorder at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, was found competent to stand trial in a preliminary report filed Dec. 22.

The final report from Western State said Darrow’s disorder was in partial remission and that he has the capacity to understand the charge against him and has the capacity to assist in his own defense.

Previous mental health reports dated last March 1 and June 2 found that Darrow was not competent to stand trial.

Port Angeles police said Darrow fired 29 rounds at his father with a semi-automatic .45-caliber pistol. Shay Darrow had stopped taking his medication prior to the shooting, police said.

Clint Darrow, who owned Van Goes pizzeria in Port Angeles, was 53.

The charge against Shay Darrow includes domestic violence and firearm enhancements that would lengthen his sentence were he to be convicted.

Shay Darrow is being held in the Clallam County jail on $500,000 bail.
