Suspected arson blocks part of Port Angeles street

Van destroyed in blaze

PORT ANGELES — A block in a residential west Port Angeles neighborhood was closed off briefly Monday morning after someone torched a van, engulfing it in flames, police said.

The white 1990 Ford Econoline, valued at $3,000, was destroyed in the fire about 9 a.m. Monday, Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada said.

It was parked at a family home on West 12th Street, Viada said, adding there were no injuries.

A block of West 12th Street at N Street was briefly shut down to traffic after the incident, he said.

A Sequim Police Department arson investigator was helping Monday with the investigation because Port Angeles Police Department personnel were investigating Saturday morning’s fatal fire at the Welcome Inn RV Park in west Port Angeles.

“There is absolutely no indication this arson is related to the Welcome Inn,” Viada stressed.

“This is a completely different case involving completely different people,” he added.

“It’s too early to tell what the motive is behind this arson.”

Viada would not comment on if there is a suspect in the vehicle fire.

“We have witnesses who saw what happened,” Viada said.

An accelerant such as gasoline was used to ignite the vehicle, he said.
