Sequim man charged after car prowl confrontation

PORT ANGELES — A Sequim man was charged Tuesday with assault and other crimes for allegedly pointing a semi-automatic firearm at a man who had chased him and thrown rocks at him for taking his property.

Nathan Reid, 21, was charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree theft, second-degree vehicle prowling and possessing a dangerous weapon on school facilities.

He will be arraigned Dec. 21 in Clallam County Superior Court.

Port Angeles police said Reid took two cellphones from an unlocked vehicle on the 300 block of East Viewcrest Avenue near Port Angeles High School on Nov. 25 when he was confronted by the vehicle owner.

Reid told police that he tossed the phones into the owner’s yard and began to walk away.

The man followed Reid, shouting and throwing rocks, before Reid pointed what appeared to be a black semi-automatic pistol at the man, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

Reid said the item he pointed at the alleged victim was a gun-shaped stick that had been painted with a dark color to resemble a gun.

Reid was alleged to have said: “Look dude, I already gave you your [stuff] back. There is no reason to follow me. If you continue I will shoot you,” Officer Eric Walker said in the probable cause statement.

The pistol or firearm-shaped stick were not recovered.

Reid is being held in the Clallam County jail on $20,000 bail.
