SEQUIM — A homeowner detained a burglary suspect at gunpoint after firing a shot into the ground while the man was allegedly running away, authorities said.
Shane Terrance Lowe, 38, of Port Angeles, was arrested Tuesday for investigation of second-degree burglary and attempted second-degree theft at the residence on U.S. Highway 101 near Sherbourne Road in Sequim.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour released Lowe on Wednesday on his own recognizance pending the filing of charges at a hearing at 1 p.m. Friday.
Lowe has 24 failure-to-appear warrants since 2000, according to the county Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
Lowe also is caring for an 11-year-old child, he told Coughenour.
Coughenour will give Lowe “an opportunity to prove yourself,” Coughenour told him.
“The important thing is, you need to show up any time you have to appear in this court.”
The homeowner and his son were alerted by a property partner at about 5 p.m. Tuesday that a motion-detector alarm had gone off in one of the shops on the homeowner’s property, according to the probable cause statement.
While responding to the call, dispatch told deputies that the homeowner had arrived and was holding Lowe at gunpoint.
The man and his son found Lowe on the property next to a pull cart from the shop that contained a welding box with automotive parts and racing pistons, engine parts, and hoses from a race sprint boat, according to the probable cause statement.
When he noticed the homeowner, Lowe ran toward a blue Ford Focus parked nearby, the statement said.
The homeowner fired a 45-caliber semiautomatic handgun into the ground and told Lowe to stop, which he did, according to the probable cause statement.
The man and his son detained Lowe without further incident until deputies arrived, authorities said.
The homeowner said the window to the shop had been broken out Jan. 28 but no suspect had been located.
The items taken and recovered from two shops on the property were valued at $3,500, authorities said.
The cart had been pulled down a trail through the grass from the shops towards where Lowe’s vehicle was parked, the sheriff’s office said.
