PORT TOWNSEND — A Quilcene man has been charged with second-degree rape for an incident that allegedly occurred nearly two years ago.
Matthew Lee Anderson, 28, was charged last week with the rape of a woman in March 2018. He was released on personal recognizance, due to lack of criminal history, on Monday following a preliminary appearance in Jefferson County Superior Court.
Anderson is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
Charging papers filed Oct. 28 allege Anderson raped a woman who was incapable of consent due to being physically helpless or mentally incapacitated.
Anderson, the victim and the victim’s brother-in-law consumed drinks at the Roadhouse Cafe in Port Townsend on March 16, 2018, according to the affidavit for probable cause.
The woman told Jefferson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brett Anglin she’s known Anderson for several years and they work at the same location in Brinnon. She said she had previously gone to the bar with him about three or four times.
At the Roadhouse, the woman said she had about five drinks. She ordered the first couple, and Anderson provided her a couple of additional ones, court records state.
The woman said Anderson might have placed something in her drink, and she thought so because she’d consumed the same amount of alcohol in the past and not become unconscious or had trouble balancing, court documents stated.
She told the deputy that Anderson and her brother-in-law drove her home, and Anderson carried her into her house in Quilcene.
The woman said Anderson locked the door behind them, and she woke up to find Anderson performing oral sex on her, court documents stated.
The woman also believed Anderson had intercourse with her, the documents said.
She told the deputy she went to Jefferson Healthcare Hospital and was directed to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for a sexual assault exam. Court documents state she provided her clothing to the hospital and burnt her bedding.
A nurse from the Bremerton hospital told the woman an abrasion was found during the exam, the documents said.
Information about the reason for the delay in the case was not available on Tuesday.
