Port Angeles police investigate pot shop break-in, residential burglaries; two suspects arrested

PORT ANGELES — City police Monday were investigating a break-in at Mister Buds marijuana shop and two residential burglaries that might have been related.

Isaiah A. Hylton, 19, and Johntay W. Toliver, 19, were arrested as part of the investigation of the early-morning break-in of the retail cannabis store at 536 Marine Drive and for investigation of second-degree possession of stolen property.

The front door of the business was smashed out, but no cash or marijuana product was taken.

“We lock everything up,” owner Malik Atwater said. “Our registers were empty. We didn’t lose anything.”

Police responded to an audible intrusion alarm at Mister Buds at 5:15 a.m. Monday.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage that showed Hylton inside the store and three suspects leaving the area in a black Ford Mustang, Sgt. Kevin Miller said in a news release.

The car did not have a rear window and had two types of wheels, Miller said.

Hylton and Toliver were stopped at Ninth and E streets in a black Ford Mustang with no rear window and different wheels at 9:44 a.m.

Police searched the Mustang and said they found credit cards belonging to a woman who reported that two vehicles at her residence on the 500 block of West 10th Street had been entered overnight with one window smashed and property taken.

Three hours later, police were dispatched to a reported burglary in the 1000 block of West 14th St., where a bicycle and tools had been taken from a garage.

The bicycle had a boy’s name written on the frame. A bicycle that was found in the back of the Mustang matched the description of the bicycle taken in the alleged 14th Street burglary, Miller said.

“This case is still evolving and we are attempting to locate the third suspect,” Miller said Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Atwater estimated that it would cost at least $500 to repair the broken door at Mister Buds. He said he rushed to the store at about 5:30 a.m. Monday, just hours after taking a child to the emergency room.

“Glass was everywhere,” Atwater said.

The staff at Mister Buds spends about one hour every day organizing and locking up flower, edibles, concentrates, paraphernalia and other marijuana product for security, Atwater said.

The attempted burglary was the first break-in at the store since it opened in March 2015.

The person who entered the business left a duffel bag inside, Atwater said.

He could be seen on video footage jumping over a glass counter to access the empty registers.

It is not necessary to jump over the counters to get to the registers, Atwater said.

Despite the property damage, Mister Buds was open for business at its usual time at 8 a.m. Monday.

Several customers asked if the temporary blue tarp covering the door was a Halloween decoration, Atwater said.
