PORT ANGELES — Joshua M. Wilson-Wedding has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm, Port Angeles police announced.
Wilson-Wedding, 34, will serve 27.75 months in state prison followed by 27.75 months of community custody as part of a prison-based Drug Offender Sentencing Act, or DOSA, sentence, Sgt. Jason Viada said.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Erik Rohrer issued the sentence after Wilson-Wedding pleaded guilty to second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm Nov. 8.
Wilson-Wedding led police on a brief foot pursuit in downtown Port Angeles on the evening of Sept. 26, police said in the affidavit for probable cause.
A witness told police that Wilson-Wedding was in downtown apartments and was possibly in possession of a firearm.
Wilson-Wedding had multiple warrants and was prohibited from possessing firearms because of at least nine prior felony convictions, Viada said.
Viada, who was on downtown foot patrol, chased a fleeing Wilson-Wedding from the apartments on West First Street into the alley between First and Front streets.
Viada stopped him in the parking lot north of the pedestrian tunnel that connects First Street to the alley by firing a stun gun probe into Wilson-Wedding’s thigh, according to the arrest report.
During the pursuit, Wilson-Wedding ditched a backpack that contained a .38-caliber Smith &Wesson semi-automatic handgun, the report said.
Wilson-Wedding was charged Sept. 27 with second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and obstructing a law enforcement officer.
The obstructing charge was dismissed as part of a negotiated plea agreement.
“A witness called police and provided timely and accurate information indicating that Wilson-Wedding was inside a downtown apartment, and that Wilson-Wedding was possibly in possession of a handgun,” Viada said in a news release.
“This case is a good example of a citizen helping the community by providing credible, timely and accurate information to law enforcement about the location of a fugitive and the commission of a felony.”
Wilson-Wedding was being held Thursday at the Washington Corrections Center near Shelton.
