Port Angeles man investigated for attempted burglary at Walmart

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man allegedly broke into Walmart through an employee entrance in an attempt to get alcohol, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.

Gregory Schultz, 47, was arrested early Wednesday morning and booked into the Clallam County Jail on investigation of attempted second-degree burglary. He was ordered to be released in Clallam County Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.

At about 2:13 a.m. Wednesday, sheriff’s deputies responded to Walmart after they received a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A Walmart employee said an intoxicated man was attempting to break into the store. He was seen arriving in a silver Toyota Corolla, which remained parked at Walmart while the man fled on foot, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies learned the man had entered the store through an after-hours employee entrance while wearing a blue Walmart vest with the nametag “Greg,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Employees recognized the man was not an employee and confronted him, the agency added.

“The suspect took a bladed stance, attempting to provoke an altercation, before leaving the store and dropping the vest in the parking lot,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release.

Deputies traced the Toyota Corolla’s registration to a Port Angeles address, and a neighbor confirmed the residence was associated with Schultz, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies returned to Walmart and located Schultz near the truck entrance. He matched the description provided by employees, who also identified Schultz as the man in the store, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Schultz admitted to deputies he had been drinking alcohol, went to the store to get more beer and wore the Walmart vest to make it appear he was an employee, the Sheriff’s Office said.
