Port Angeles man charged with killing father to be evaluated for competency

PORT ANGELES — A competency evaluation has been ordered for a Port Angeles man charged with his father’s murder.

Shay Clinton Darrow is charged with first-degree premeditated murder-domestic violence with a firearm enhancement in the Jan. 12 shooting death of Clint Leroy Darrow.

The 28-year-old refused to come to court for his scheduled arraignment Friday.

His attorney, John Hayden of Clallam Public Defender, presented an agreed order for a mental health evaluation, saying his client’s mental condition had been worsening.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly signed the order for Darrow to be evaluated at Western State Hospital in Lakewood.

A review hearing was scheduled for Feb. 24.

Darrow is described in court documents as a schizophrenic who had stopped taking his medication before the shooting.

Efforts had been made by family members to take his gun away in the weeks leading up to the incident, police said in the affidavit for probable cause.

Clint Darrow was found dead inside his home at 201 W. Ninth St. after Shay Darrow called 9-1-1.

Port Angeles police said Shay Darrow fired 29 rounds at his father with a semi-automatic .45-caliber pistol, stopping at one point to retrieve more ammunition from his upstairs bedroom.

After his arrest, Shay Darrow told police that he had been “fed up” with his father prior to the shooting.

Clint Darrow, who owned Van Goes pizzeria in Port Angeles, was 53.
