Port Angeles police search for armed robber

PORT ANGELES — Police on Saturday were searching for an armed man who reportedly robbed The Daily Grind espresso stand Friday afternoon and fled into the woods.

An employee called 9-1-1 at 4:45 p.m. Friday saying a man had approached the window, displayed a handgun and demanded cash, said Sgt. Kori Malone of the Port Angeles Police Department.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the man fled into a wooded area to the north of the business at 1919 E. First St., Malone said.

The man is described as in his 30s with a tan complexion, possibly Asian. He was described as having dark hair, a very slender build and standing about 5-foot-7 or 5-foot-8.

He was last seen “wearing dark clothing, dark sunglasses, with bad teeth and carrying a backpack,” Malone said.

After the reported robbery, Port Angeles police, Clallam County sheriff’s deputies and State Patrol troopers established containment around a large area that included the former Rayonier mill property, Malone said.

A search was conducted by K-9 officer Bogey and the dog’s handler, Officer Allen Brusseau.

The active ground search was discontinued at about 6 p.m. Friday.

“The investigation is still ongoing,” Malone said.

Brusseau said there had been a couple of reported citings of the man Saturday.

“It turned out to be not the right person,” he said.

The coffee stand employee who reported the robbery was not injured.

“She did the right thing,” Malone said.

“She didn’t put herself in any danger and she called immediately.”

Anyone with information is urged to call the Port Angeles Police Department at 360-452-4545.
