Police: Port Angeles man arrested after threatening neighbors with sledgehammer

Edward Paul Horner held without bond

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man was arrested Monday after threatening two neighbors with a sledgehammer, police said.

Edward Paul Horner, 61, was booked into the Clallam County jail for investigation of two counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and a state Department of Corrections warrant.

He was being held Monday without bond.

Port Angeles police said Horner used a sledgehammer with a medium-length handle to threaten two neighbors at an apartment building on the city’s west side.

“He didn’t actually hit anybody with it,” Deputy Chief of Police Jason Viada said.

“He raised it up and specifically threatened to crush one of the victims’ skulls with it.”

Horner also used the tool to break glass at the apartment building, police said.

Viada said he did not know what led to the morning confrontation at Maloney Heights or the extent of the damage to the Serenity House of Clallam County building.

Horner was booked into jail at 10:22 a.m. The investigation was ongoing Monday afternoon.

In August 2018, Horner pleaded guilty to harassment — bodily injury for threatening a neighbor with a putty knife, Clallam County Superior Court records show.

He was sentenced in that case to 30 days in jail with credit for time served.

In November 2018, Horner pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon for punching, kicking and striking a neighbor with a frying pan, court papers show.

He was sentenced in that case to 364 days in jail with 297 days suspended and credit for time served.

Horner had eight other felony cases between 2013 and 2018, four of which were dismissed or resulted in no charges being filed.

Horner is expected to make his first court appearance on the new case today.
