PA man faces assault charge in alleged shooting

PORT ANGELES — A man who told law enforcement he shot at his neighbor last week because he was upset at a house being built has been charged in Clallam County Superior Court.

Derek D. Darling, 40, was charged Friday with first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon with a firearm enhancement and a law enforcement enhancement.

Darling shot toward a nearby home under construction in the 100 block of Mountain Home Road, according to a probable cause statement filed Wednesday.

Judge Erik Rohrer set $250,000 bail Wednesday for Darling in the alleged shooter’s first Superior Court appearance.

Darling told investigators that before he shot at the house, he told the neighbor to leave.

Peninsula Communications law enforcement dispatchers said they heard gunshots in the background when the resident of the home called 9-1-1 at about 12:30 p.m. July 24.

When Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Cortani arrived, Darling pointed the rifle at him from the end of Darling’s driveway, according to the probable cause statement.

Deputies convinced him to put the gun down and then arrested him after a brief struggle.
