One dead in shooting at Sandy Shores Lake

Sheriff’s investigators leaning toward self-defense

PORT HADLOCK — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man shot in the early morning hours Wednesday at Sandy Shore Lake, with investigators leaning toward self-defense.

Detective Sgt. Brett Anglin said at about 3:40 a.m., the department received a 9-1-1 call about a shooting at Sandy Shore Lake where one male subject had shot another male subject.

“Deputies arrived and found one of the subjects deceased,” Anglin said. “Both subjects were armed and it appeared that a conflict had taken place. One subject was detained and questioned and evidence recovered, and (the subject) was subsequently released pending the investigation.”

9-1-1 call

Anglin said it was the person deputies detained and questioned who made the 9-1-1 call.

The sheriff’s office posted about the incident on social media Wednesday morning, saying deputies were responding to a report of a shooting in the Sandy Shores Lake Road area and that one person was confirmed deceased.

Anglin said the sheriff’s office is not yet releasing any further information regarding the two subjects, but that the names will likely be released later in the week.

Whether or not alcohol was involved is still under investigation, Anglin said, and he added JCSO doesn’t believe there to be any danger to the public and that the shooting was an isolated incident between the two men.

Anglin said cases like this can take time to investigate, and it would likely be several weeks or months before the sheriff’s office is able to come to a conclusion.
