Minor injuries in prison fights

No staff hurt in Sunday incidents at Clallam Bay

CLALLAM BAY — State Department of Corrections officials were investigating two fights that occurred at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center on Sunday.

Agency spokeswoman Janelle Guthrie said the fights resulted in minor injuries and did not appear to be related to COVID-19.

“The entire facility is on restricted movement as staff continue to investigate the incident,” Guthrie said in a Monday email.

Officers responded to a multi-inmate fight in the West End prison’s big yard at about 8:50 p.m. Sunday, Guthrie said.

“As individuals involved in that fight were being escorted out, a second fight erupted,” Guthrie said.

Officers deployed multiple rounds of pepper spray and fired five warning shots to bring the second fight under control.

“Medical staff assessed individuals involved and documented only minor injuries among the incarcerated population,” Guthrie said.

“No injuries were reported for staff.”

Those suspected of being involved in the fight were placed in administrative segregation pending further investigation.

Guthrie could not say how many inmates were placed into segregation.

“The total number of individuals involved is still under investigation,” she said.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ed Anderson said West End deputies were not needed.

“The prison sent a message to us last night to inform us there was a fight but our assistance was ultimately not needed,” Anderson said.
