Man jailed after jumping from police vehicle

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man who is accused of jumping out of a moving patrol car in Port Angeles.

Justin Troy Cox, 31, was booked into the Clallam County jail early Saturday morning for investigation of possession of a controlled substance, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, multiple warrants, second-degree malicious mischief, third-degree malicious mischief and resisting arrest.

Deputy Don Kitchen responded at about 12:04 a.m. in west Sequim to a report of a stolen vehicle, according to a press release.

About an hour later, Deputy Eric Morris located the vehicle parked in a driveway on Monroe Road.

Kitchen and Port Angeles Police Department K-9 Officer Whitney Fairbanks went to the address on Monroe Road where they found Cox passed out in the driver’s seat of the stolen vehicle and found him in possession of methamphetamine, according to the press release.

He resisted arrest and was taken into custody without injury.

As Cox was on his way to jail he began kicking the door and windows of the patrol vehicle, damaging the rear passenger door and smashing out the rear driver’s side door window, the press release said.

He jumped out of the moving patrol car near Front Street and Race Street in Port Angeles.

Morris then caught Cox again and transported him to Olympic Medical Center where he was treated for superficial injuries, before being booked into the jail.

It wasn’t the first time Cox had run from law enforcement. He fled from a PAPD officer who attempted to arrest him for a no-bail Department of Corrections warrant last year.
