Man found sleeping at the Veterans Affairs clinic says he didn’t break the window

PORT ANGELES — A man found sleeping in a lab at the Veterans Affairs medical clinic in Port Angeles on Thursday morning awoke to police officers asking if he was the one who broke into the building overnight.

Carlo Arthur Stubbs, 30, told police he wasn’t the one who threw a rock through the window of one of the front doors. He was booked into the Clallam County jail for investigation of second-degree burglary and third-degree malicious mischief, said Sgt. Josh Powless.

“It just looks like he was sleeping there,” Powless said. “It’s not often with a window broken that you’ll find someone inside, but it happens on occasion.”

Stubbs, who did not appear in court Thursday, was held in the Clallam County jail without bond.

Powless said clinic staff called police at 7:16 a.m., reporting that a rock had been thrown through the window.

While police were on their way staff called back to say they also found a man asleep in the lab. Police woke him up and arrested him without incident, Powless said.

“He denied breaking the window,” Powless said.

Powless said that nothing had been stolen and the only thing that had been broken was the one window.

Burglary, under state law, is when someone with intent to commit a crime against a person or property enters or remains unlawfully in a building.

Staff at the VA clinic and a spokesperson for Veterans Affairs each said they couldn’t comment because the incident was under investigation.
