Hearing reset for alleged murderers

PORT ANGELES — A review hearing for alleged murderers Benjamin Bonner and Shay Darrow was reset Thursday because a defense expert had not yet furnished a report.

Bonner and Darrow are charged in separate cases but have appeared together in recent hearings because their legal issues are nearly identical.

Bonner, 19, is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of a family friend, Cynthia Little, in May 2017.

He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Darrow, 29, is charged with first-degree murder with with domestic violence for the shooting death of his father, Clint Darrow, in January 2017.

He intends to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, defense attorney John Hayden has said.

Hayden asked a defense psychologist to evaluate Bonner and Darrow to compel insanity evaluations at Western State Hospital.

Hayden reported Thursday that his expert had just returned from a vacation and was preparing a summary report.

“I expect it fairly soon,” Hayden said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Erik Rohrer reset the review hearing for May 3.

Bonner also is charged with first-degree animal cruelty first-degree robbery for allegedly killing Little’s dog and driving Little’s vehicle from her Sunland residence to his Bainbridge Island home.

Bonner is being held on $1.5 million bail.

Darrow is being held on $500,000 bail.
