PORT ANGELES — A fugitive who escaped from an Alabama prison and was caught in Port Angeles on Oct. 1 waived his right to a speedy trial Friday.
Dylan Keith Carroll, who was scheduled to go to trial Nov. 28, signed the waiver at the recommendation of his attorney.
Carroll, 24, is charged with being a fugitive from justice in another state, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Defense attorney Alex Stalker of Clallam Public Defender reported Friday that he was having trouble getting information from other states to determine Carroll’s offender score, according to the minutes of the hearing.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Erik Rohrer scheduled a resolve or reset hearing for Dec. 16.
Carroll was serving the first year of a 13-year prison sentence for an arson conviction when he escaped from a minimum-security center in Deatsville, Ala., on Sept. 23, investigators said.
Carroll allegedly drove a stolen 2016 Chevrolet pickup truck across the country and illegally possessed a stolen Glock 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Carroll was at a Forks coffee shop Oct. 1. Carroll had left the area when officers arrived.
The wife of an Olympic National Park ranger reported seeing the pickup Carroll was driving just east of Port Angeles later that day.
Sheriff’s deputies soon found Carroll inside the pickup at the parking lot of a Port Angeles Walmart.
Carroll is being held in the Clallam County jail on $100,000 bail.
He was serving the prison sentence for setting fire to a hotel in Tallassee, Ala., in 2009.
Carroll did not waive extradition and did not consent to return to Alabama, court documents said.
