PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Police Department has obtained a temporary extreme risk protection order in Clallam County Superior Court against Jacqueline O’Steen.
The order issued on Wednesday began immediately and extends for 14 days or until the next court hearing.
Commissioner Brandon R. Mack signed the order and set the next hearing for 9 a.m. Thursday in Room 3 of Clallam County Superior Court.
According to the Seattle Police Department’s website, an extreme risk protection order “prevents individuals at high risk of harming themselves or others from accessing firearms by allowing family, household members, and police to obtain a court order when there is demonstrated evidence that the person poses a significant danger.”
Court documents state that the police established probable cause “that the respondent committed three counts of reckless endangerment by unlawfully discharging approximately 20 rounds from Ruger .38 handgun at who she believed were people in her attic space. Peninsula Behavioral Health staff recently tried contacting the respondent who did not accept services.”
The police department’s protection order request asks that after a hearing, the order last for one year “because the respondent poses a significant danger of causing personal injury to self or others by having custody or control of, purchasing, possessing, accessing, receiving or attempting to purchase or receive firearms.”
According to court documents, O’Steen had a shotgun and/or rifle in the living room and stairwell of the house at 230 E. Fifth St. “Ex-husband indicates there are additional firearms in the house,” the documents state. A handgun currently is in the Port Angeles Police Department evidence room.
The documents also say, “respondent made several calls to dispatch prior to the most recent incident wherein she indicates people are in her attic.”
She also twice reported people in her attic and officers responded to both calls. On Oct. 31, “respondent barricaded her front door thinking someone was breaking in. PBH staff responded but the respondent declined services.”
O’Steen was booked into the Clallam County jail Tuesday evening after police investigated a report of gunshots at a home in the Cherry Hill neighborhood of Port Angeles.
O’Steen was booked for investigation of discharge of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Bond was set at $100,000. She has not been charged.
No one was reported injured and police had no information that she had shot at a person, said Detective Sgt. Kori Malone with the Port Angeles Police Department.
