PORT ANGELES — An Everett man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison following a guilty plea to two counts of possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver while armed with a firearm.
Daniel Hawn, 27, was sentenced Tuesday by Clallam County Superior Court Judge Simon Barnhart, who followed the recommendation from the county prosecuting attorney’s office.
“This case underscores the continued scourge that drug dealing is in our community,” said Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Steve Johnson, who handled the case. “Hawn had no known ties to Clallam County but came here armed and with several narcotics he was planning to sell.
“Guns and drugs bring a lot of harm and risk to our community, and this resolution reflects how seriously we take these types of crimes.”
Early in the morning on Jan. 7, Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Steffen Estep came upon a running car parked on the wrong side of the road near Sequim Bay Lodge, the prosecuting attorney’s office stated in a press release.
Estep went up to the car and saw both the driver and passenger were asleep. Estep knocked on the driver’s window and Hawn woke up, the prosecuting attorney’s office said.
Estep saw a gun on the driver’s floorboard, and Hawn, who had a warrant for his arrest, claimed the gun was fake, the prosecuting attorney’s office said.
Estep and other law enforcement personnel from the sheriff’s office and Sequim Police Department eventually seized the gun, which was real, along with sizeable quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin from Hawn’s car, the prosecuting attorney’s office said.
Hawn has eight previous felony convictions, including burglary, theft of property, vehicle theft, attempting to elude police and unlawfully possessing a firearm, the prosecuting attorney’s office said.
“Deputy Estep handled that situation about as capably as one could,” Barnhart said.
