Deputies investigate burglary, cigarette theft near Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary that occurred at the Lincoln Park Grocery near Port Angeles last week, Sgt. Brian Knutson said.

Two boys forced their way into the store at 1500 W. Lauridsen Blvd. early Thursday morning and stole hundreds of dollars worth of cigarettes and caused several hundred dollars worth of damage, Knutson said.

One of the juveniles was arrested Thursday and the second remained at large Friday, he said.

The owner of the store, which is just outside the city limits, provided video surveillance footage showing the burglary in progress, Knutson said.

The boys in the video were identified with help from the staff at the Clallam County Juvenile and Family Services Facility.

Deputies found one of the boys, who admitted involvement in the burglary. He was in possession of cigarettes taken from the store, Knutson said.

The boy, who was not identified because of his age, was booked into the juvenile detention center for investigation of second-degree burglary, third-degree theft, third-degree malicious mischief and third-degree possession of stolen property, Knutson said.

The second suspect was out of town last week but deputies had contacted the boy’s parents, he added.

The Lincoln Park Grocery was reported as the target of two burglaries in 2017.

A 14-year-old Port Angeles boy and a 16-year-old Forks boy were arrested in June 2017 for allegedly taking cigarettes and other items from the store.

The arrests were made after the owner of the store installed a security camera.

“The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens to keep their houses, vehicles, and other belongings locked up as the summer months begin,” Knutson said in a news release.

“If anyone sees suspicious activity, they are encouraged to report it to law enforcement right away.”
