Crisis response team arrests man suspected in robbery

SEQUIM — A 61-year-old man has been charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary after he allegedly took two phones from another man at a Carlsborg gas station.

Stephen Massey of Diamond Point was arrested about 6 a.m. Friday without incident as a crisis response team executed a search warrant at his residence.

He was being held Monday in the Clallam County jail in lieu of $110,000 bond.

The alleged robbery occurred about 8:23 p.m. July 23 as Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a disturbance involving a man chasing another man into the Chevron gas station, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The man who was being chased was yelling to call law enforcement, and the man who was chasing him had what appeared to be a holstered gun, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When deputies arrived, they found the suspect had fled the scene but developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for Massey, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Court documents stated Massey approached a man and told him he owed him $60 for a drug-related purchase two to three weeks prior. Video surveillance showed Massey chase the man into the gas station and later enter the man’s truck to take two phones, the documents said.

Since Massey was armed, the Olympic Peninsula Crisis Response Team helped with the arrest on Friday. The team consisted of members from multiple agencies, including the Port Angeles Police Department, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Clallam County Fire District 3 and two armored vehicles, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crisis response team hailed Massey through a public address system, and Massey exited the residence following all directions from team members.
