CAPE GEORGE — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of suspicious fires in the Cape George area.
Patrol Sgt. Brett Anglin said evidence points strongly toward the about seven or eight fires being human caused. The fires all have occurred since March, he added.
“Although the case is extremely urgent at this point, it could be become unmanageable come later months when it becomes dryer,” Anglin said.
The fire danger level in the county is currently low, but Fire Marshal Phil Cecere recently announced that the level will be increased to moderate on June 1, a month ahead of schedule, in anticipation of a notably dry season.
Sheriff’s deputies are increasing patrols in the area and the office is requesting public assistance from those who may have information regarding the identities of those responsible, Anglin said.
The fires have occurred in wooded areas along Cape George Road, between Pocket Lane and Dennis Boulevard, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
“I believe it’s mostly on (state Department of Natural Resources) land as well as Cape George Colony Club land,” Anglin said.
The fires have not been able to spread excessively, Anglin said.
“As we all know, in the coming months, that is going to change drastically,” Anglin said.
