Attempted burglary reported at VFW post in Forks

FORKS — A safe at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9106 in Forks was too strong to pry open during an attempted burglary, Forks Police Chief Mike Rowley said Wednesday.

The perpetrator is suspected to be a young adult female, he said.

Rowley said someone entered the 110 Spartan Ave. building at about midnight Monday.

The person gained access through a window that was open or was jimmied open.

The incident was reported at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday.

Rowley said there were significant marks on the 5-foot-tall safe but nothing was taken.

“It’s not something you’re going to pry open,” Rowley said.

Forks police investigating the incident are following up on clues from area businesses’ video cameras that indicate the intruder was a young adult.

“It may be a female, actually,” Rowley said.

“Nobody has been identified in particular at this time.”

The incident appears random, he added.

VFW meetings are held, bingo is played and veterans’ meals are served in the building.

Rowley is a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1999-2004.

“As a veteran, it hits you below the knees when someone breaks into something like the VFW or a place that helps people,” he said.
