PORT ANGELES — A man who allegedly attempted to rob a bank in downtown Port Angeles and was killed during the incident by Port Angeles police officers has been identified.
Joseph Jacob Hadden, 38, of Port Angeles died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and extremities, according to a press release Friday from the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team (KCIRT).
Hadden had no known criminal history, KCIRT said.
Toxicology results from the Washington State Patrol Toxicology Laboratory are pending, KCIRT said.
A board-certified forensic pathologist with the Kitsap County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Hadden on Tuesday, KCIRT said.
“Details specific to the incident will not be provided at this time because it is still under active investigation, which is common practice,” said Capt. Aaron Elton, the public information officer for KCIRT, in the press release.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney for review.

KCIRT will provide weekly updates with information that is publicly available, per the independent investigations section of the Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act.
“As with any ongoing investigation, the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team (KCIRT) has not made any final determinations or conclusions about this incident,” the press release stated.
KCIRT’s investigation team includes three community representatives, and a KCIRT liaison has also been assigned to work with the family of the decedent.
Two Port Angeles police officers responded to a hold-up alarm May 3 and encountered Hadden with a handgun outside Chase Bank, 101 W. Front St., Police Chief Brian Smith and Clallam County Sheriff Brian King said in a prepared statement last week.
“The facts as we believe them to be now tell us that the PAPD Officers were confronted with a lethal threat and that they carried out their duties to protect the public and other officers,” the statement said.
Police officers and sheriff’s deputies immediately provided emergency medical aid to Hadden, and firefighter/paramedics from the Port Angeles Fire Department responded and initiated advanced life-support measures, police said.
Because it was an officer-involved shooting, state law requires the incident to be investigated by an outside agency.
The Port Angeles Police Department will later conduct an internal investigation, Smith said.
